I’m not completely done with college yet, but I will be in less than 3 months. My accomplishments in the school of life won’t be printed on my diploma, but college has definitely allowed me to gain more than a formal education. Here are some of the most important things i’ve learned about life while in college:
Perfection is imperfect
Some of my biggest accomplishments were just comebacks from massive failures. You may not know it yet, but your struggle might be the start of a very beautiful story. Embrace it.
Lead with the end in mind
Life threw many it’s curveballs while I was in college, and it almost made me want to give up on being the first college graduate in my immediate family. What I learned helped me stay on track was to visualize my desired end-result. As soon as I made sure to keep that vision at the forefront of my mind, making decisions became easy. I knew where I wanted to be, so it helped guide me in what I needed to do.
Great things happen with the help of others
I have always been an individualistic kind of person. I never liked the idea of burdening others with my struggles. Sometimes, you can’t do things alone. It takes a lot of support and motivation from others at some point to keep on going when the road gets tough. It’s important to make friends along the way.
Time stops for no one
Don’t expect plans to go smoothly, every single time. Expect some bumps in the road and detours- be prepared! Time will not stop counting the seconds of the day because of an emergency. Being prepared to the best of my ability has been a lifesaver in this situations.
Common goals unify people
In college, I met so many people from all parts of the world. I’ve learned that some people have had very difficult lives, and some have not. At the end of the day, I learned that no matter what differences were present between my classmates and I- we where all fighting the same battle.
Live a little
It’s so tempting to plan every second of the day as a college student (or anyone who’s busy for that matter!) Sometimes you just need to step away from the madness and live life. Enjoying life and being present allowed me to have new experiences that I could find inspiration in. Inspiration fueled my motivation and without it, I wouldn’t have been able to do very well in school.
Your peers can be your greatest resources
I’ve met many amazing people during college. Many of my peers have connections in industries that i’m interesting in breaking into, and are experienced professionals themselves. I learned to start with the people that I already know for valuable connections and resources. You never know who knows somebody!
College is so much more than reading and listening to professors lecture. It involves many significant projects that require a lot of work. The projects I earned really high grades on have a common denominator- it reflects my personality and style. If I was too afraid to let my personality shine through my work in fear that I would be rejected, it wouldn’t stand out. It is important to be yourself and let your personality shine through your efforts!
I’ve learned so much in college, and I will be taking many great memories with me. College has been so much more than earning good grades, but it has truly been an experience where i’ve been able to learn about myself and what motivates me in life! What was your college experience like? What would you tell someone who is just starting out about what you’ve learned while you where in college?
